Mary, there is a strong demand for marketing books, and sites like this would be a great spot to gather insight. I started by writing and writing and writing. The more difficult part has been figuring out what to do with it once it's written. All of the Writers Market books & mags. help with where to go next.
It's still really a process, and I'm certainly not "there" by any means. I will say that the online communities have tremendous resources and support to give.
