2007 Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year, Mary Ellen Courville strives to build connections with students. Empathy motivates her writing as well. Her voice is heard locally through regular parenting articles in BRParents magazine.
Fiction is Mary Ellen's first love, however. In 2007 a short story "Breathe," inspired by the aftermath of the Louisiana hurricanes, appeared in an anthology. The companion Y/A novel tracks the lives of three teens as they face life after destruction and rebuild. It is currently in the revision phase.
Elementary children have received most of Mary Ellen's writing attention recently as her first children's book "The Pilgrim's Basket" awaits release in 2008. As both a teacher and a writer, Mary Ellen listened as she heard about a class of Louisiana children who grew a garden and donated the vegetables to hungry families. "The Pilgrim's Basket" is a fiction children's story based not on the lessons the learning project meant to teach, but the unexpected outcome that taught the most. I was homeless and addicted to crack cocaine for years. I walked the streets carrying my clothes from place to place and shelter to shelter. This went on for years, Then, I couldn't stand living like that anymore. I managed to earn enough money for a one-way train ticket to Chicago. Didn't know my way around or anyone in this city. I found a church and ran to the altar and stayed there praying for help from God. He heard my cry.
That was four years ago. Today, I am delivered from drugs and being homeless. I am happily married to my wife of two years. I am a licensed minister for Church of God in Christ. And I also write books about my struggle with drugs. I have two published books and you can purchase either of them from: www.awjbooks.com or Barnes & Noble bookstores. The name of my book is: "Look What The Lord Has Done". Tell someone about my testimony. Thank you and God Bless!

Blog tours work well if you plan them well ahead, solicit/select bloggers who have lots of traffic to their blogs in the demographics of your desired target audience. I usually have some gifts I give away (sample first chapters to all commenters, a grand prize of a free book for one lucky person, etc.) and also offer reciprocal favors to all the hosts. I did two tours with Owen Fiddler - one in Jan when the ebook came out, that was a string of interviews with me the author. Then when the trade paperback came out I put my main character, Owen Fiddler on tour, with HIM being interviewed - it was a cool twist that allowed me to get a double whammy on the same book. I've found that a monthlong tour is too long, 1 to 2 weeks with features every other day seems best. Best to you and your promotions!
You're right- BTR doesn't really count as Acadiana. I wrote that and then looked at where you are located. Its a long drive to Eunice! Where and what do you teach? I teach at LSUE- Im in the education department.
