We're talking about your masterpiece!

An ebook (e-book) is an electronic book an often is another alternative to having your book published quickly until you are able to muster the money to print your book. With an ebook you can actually self-publish parts of the book before the entire book is finished.

Have you considered publishing your own ebook?

Coach Marla,

What made you decide to go the ebook route? What were your expectations? Did you publish the ebook yourself or use another company?

Here's how we may distinguish between publishing your ebook yourself vs. going through another company. When you publish your ebook yourself you typically will retain between 97%-85% of the profits after the sell of your ebook. However, if you were to go through another company you would retain anywhere from 5% to 25% of the profit after the sell of an ebook.

It is always good to be informed and well educated, so that you may make the most intelligent decision possible. It has been my experience that waiting to long in the information age will ensure that you get left behind. I've had to educate and influence my mind to think quickly, make decisions and make adjustments when necessary. Sometimes this may be a bit scary, but necessary in order to compete at the global level. We are now in a position to do international business without leaving our bedroom. A competitor is always wake attempting to get the jump on your progress thus far.

Ok, I'm going on and on... lol

I have several out by rene ebooks/pageturner editions. They sell pretty well if you market them through fictionwise.

Susie, do you have the ability to sell your ebooks yourself? For instance, may you sell them directly from your profile page on this site, your official website or blog, etc.?

I have had two ebooks published in the late 90s. And thankfully my Love Inspired books are being offered as ebooks at Harlequin and Kindle on Amazon.

Margaret, thank you for chiming in so quickly. This is going to be fantastic I tell you fantastic!

My publisher, Cambridge Books ALWAYS pubs a new author as an Ebook first, through their ebook branch, Write Words, Inc. Then if the author exhibits the drive necessary to self-promote and make a name for him or herself, they move it into the print version. My latest novel, OWEN FIDDLER, is now in trade paperback, but still available in ebook and also on amazon as a Kindle book. Best to pub both ways, reaches a broader readership.

I don't think the choice is "either-or".

I'm planning several versions of my new book (due "any day"!). E-book encompasses a number of alternatives.

One thing that I think would be helpful is a discussion of the various formats for e-books and their advantages and disadvantages. It's easy to create a PDF file and call that an e-book. But the real advantage has to come from reaching at least a segment of your audience with something that is better for them than a hard copy. PDF might work for people who want to print the book on their own printers. It's not a terrible way to read something on a PC, but it probably won't work on a Kindle or an iPod.

I don't know what formats are most appropriate for those devices. I suspect that a different distribution strategy is also needed for different devices. That's where I'd love to see more discussion.

Cheers,
Jim

I rarely think or talk about "doing an ebook" or any other particular medium.

I prefer to plan my business around ideas and memes.. the message that I want to propagate.

Once we have that, we use any and all media. The e-book distribution of texts that would otherwise be printed and placed in stores will continue to grow, but there is more value in real books.. our culture over 500 years has put value on being a book author.

I don't limit the materials in a book or ebook.. we use them in seminars, multi-media programs and now social media

An EBook is a fantastic medium and I have several ebooks for sale (http://arvoreentreasures.com) however, as Warren says you need to consider your ideas and use the most appropriate medium.

I have been using audio a lot and now using Video as a teaching medium.
